87% Chenin Blanc/13% Riesling. 129 cases produced. In 2012 we chose to explore the “Gravity Check” formula with Riesling singing soprano to Chenin Blanc’s tenor. Chenin, as always, came from the Jurassic Park Vineyard, located on a gently sloping, sandy parcel along Foxen Canyon Road. Riesling came from the slightly more gravelly soils of Area 51, located immediately above JPV. Both sites enjoy a moderate maritime influence, with growing season highs in the upper 80’s and nighttime lows in the mid-50’s. The Chenin and Riesling were picked together and co-fermented with native yeast in 2 small stainless steel cubes, with peak temperatures reaching the low 70’s. Warm by some standards, but ideal for filling the wine in with richness and mid-palate gravity. Aging occurred in a mix of stainless and used wood; and the wine spent 11 months on fermentation lees (occasionally stirred) prior to racking, and bottling in August of 2013. In keeping with tradition, 2 “magic barrels” went through spontaneous ML and were allowed to proceed to completion uninhibited. The most proud and concentrated Gravity Check to date, our 2012 bottling shows Chenin Blanc’s classic green apple and honeydew melon aromas melded with a fascinating wet flagstone character from the addition of Riesling to the blend. Finishing with roasted-hazelnut-richness and a saline/mineral quality, this is a wine for the table and the cellar. Enjoy now with hard cheeses and dried fruit, or cellar for 5 to 7 years to bring out more of the earthy qualities of aged Chenin Blanc. 201 cases produced.
