The origin of the winemaking family Sparr goes back to 1680 when Jean Sparr was born. Under the influence of François Pierre Sparr in 1785, the vineyards were increased. Generations later, Charles Sparr developed the business, increasing the activities in the area of trade and regarding wine aging. His son Pierre took the succession at the age of 20. His distinct sense for business made him a pioneer of the “estate bottling” of wines in Alsace. His motto was: “invest, progress, and maintain.” During WWII Sigolsheim and its vineyards were completely destroyed. With a lot of courage and obstinacy, Pierre Sparr rebuilt one of Alsace’s most beautiful and prestigious Domaines. His sons René and Charles contributed to the enlargement of the vineyards and the development of the European markets which gave a new dimension to the company. Nowadays, with the help of the 9th generation, the aim is still to perpetuate tradition, passion, and emotion.
We tasted these wines together on March 17th. You can watch it here:

Pierre Sparr Crémant d'Alsace Brut Rosé, $22.99
The Crémant Rosé brut shines in a bright salmon color, with fine sparkles bubbling in the glass. The first aromas evoke lemon peel, strawberry jam, and white pepper, together with crispy mineral notes. After a while, the wine opens up to an aroma of apricots and strawberries. On the palate overall pleasant and harmonious, balanced between strong body, extract, and fresh fruit, which is well supported by a tasty hint of soft tannins. Marvelous for warm summer evenings.

2018 Pierre Sparr Riesling, $15.99
A dry and elegant wine, fine nose with mineral notes, citrus fruits, and yellow lemon aromas. A beautiful length with salinity and a very nice freshness. A great wine to keep for mid-term aging.

2018 Pierre Sparr Pinot Gris Reserve, $19.99
The 2018 Pinot Gris opens shy and still reductive with very ripe and a bit caramelized fruit aromas but also shows a nice mineral purity in the background. Round and creamy on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, mouth-charmingly smooth white with intense fruit, finesse, and freshness, as well as a delicate tannin structure.
