After learning the craft of making bubbles at Champagne Taittinger, then coming home and working as a winemaker for one of New Zealand’s earliest wine brands, Corbans, Claire Allen went on to be the first winemaker at Lawson’s Dry Hills before taking the plunge into making her own wine with her husband Mike. The wine they named after a beautiful native New Zealand bird, The Huia. Huia's wines are organic and appropriate for vegans.

We are tasting these wines together at 6:30 on Thursday, June 3rd, with Claire. Join us here for the tasting:

2020 Huia Sauvignon Blanc, $16.99

Huia Sauvignon Blanc shows a good aromatic intensity with bright floral notes of elderflower and lime blossom. The wine is layered with flavors ranging from guava, melon, gooseberry, and lime zest. Because a small percentage of the wine was aged in a little neutral oak, it has the complexity and softness to be a delicious match with food.

2020 Hunky Dory Tangle White, $14.99

A blend of Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. Aromas of honeysuckle and jasmine with hints of bright nashi pear. On the palate, fruity notes of ripe apple and lychee with a mineral texture lead to a smooth balanced finish.

2016 Huia Pinot Noir, $27.99

On the nose, the Huia Pinot Noir shows notes of spice, violets, and dark cherry. The palate is rich and full with plum and dark cherry alongside hints of spice and savoury notes. A wine of savoury complexity, it is delicious with meats like garlic salami and iberico ham, lamb shanks, rare beef, or a wild mushroom risotto.
