Join us Thursday, August 13th at 6:30pm for a Zoom tasting of Spy Valley wines with winemaker Wendy Stucky.

The 1990s were a time of discovery and courage in Marlborough. Deep in the Waihopai Valley, Bryan and Jan Johnson had the audacity to establish 180 hectares of estate vineyards on land considered too hard, too dry, and too unfertile for wine.

It was a venture that started with a passion for the land. This pioneering spirit established one of New Zealand’s most successful family-run wineries, now exporting eight varietals to 35 countries.

Today, Spy Valley’s commitment remains to the land and to the people who tend it – simply farmers at heart, nurturing soil and vine to cultivate the complexities in their wine. And mindful that it’s their focus on sustainability which will ensure their guardianship of this land for generations to come.

They are considered a little clandestine, deep in their bewitching valley. Perhaps it comes with being named for their proximity to the spy base down the road, but they like a bit of mystery.

Perhaps it’s because they are always searching for the best of the best to produce exceptional wine. Perhaps it’s because managing eight varieties of grapes takes a great deal of knowing the land, the environment, and the climate.

The result is very special wines from a very special place.

Thursday's tasting will include the following wines in the order we will taste them.

2019 Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc, $15.99

Enticing aromas of grapefruit, feijoa, bell pepper, and a hint of orange zest. Mouth filling and vibrant with flavours of citrus, green herbs, and tropical fruits. The mid palate is rich and textured while retaining fine acidity and elegance overall. The fruit will be at its most vibrant in the first 2 years but expect this vintage to retain its freshness until at least 2024. The richness and complexity will be more apparent as the wine ages

Handpicked fruit from a unique single block of riverside vines selected for their refined flavour and structure. A lingering experience of citrus flower, lemon zest, grapefruit, and white peach balance a complex Sauvignon Blanc with a long invigorating finish. A small portion fermented in French oak barrels for a smoother texture, more complexity, and heightened secondary aromas. A refined and complex Sauvignon Blanc that elevates cuisine.

2015 Spy Valley Pinot Noir, $26.99

Aromas of vibrant red fruits, cocoa powder, and dried spice. Supple, long, and fruit focused with a finely grained tannin structure. Red berry flavours with a hint of toasty oak.
