Join us Thursday, October 1st at 6:30pm for a Zoom tasting of Bedrock Cellars wines with legendary California winemaker Joel Peterson. Bedrock Wine Co. was started in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson (Joel Peterson's son). Joel, the "godfather of zinfandel" as the founder and winemaker at Ravenswood, will conduct the tasting because Morgan is expecting a baby to be born on October 1st! Working out of a small converted chicken coop in a friend’s backyard, Morgan focused on making personality-filled wines wrought from a small array of thoughtfully farmed vineyards. Over time the chicken coop and its outdoor fermenters and tiny basket press gave way to production at another friend’s winery and eventually to the “elegant” tin-sided warehouse that is now called home. In addition, after six years of working alone, the winery welcomed Chris Cottrell as a partner-in-crime along with a small, dedicated staff of highly decent human beings. The winery is first and foremost a mission-driven operation dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. These vineyards, planted by California’s viticultural pioneers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are living pieces of history. Not only are they able to draw inspiration from those very pioneers but they get to actually use the materials they planted which have survived two world wars, Prohibition, and a constantly changing marketplace. If something has been growing for over 100 years it not only deserves respect but it probably makes some darn good wine too.

Thursday's tasting will include these three wines, tasted in this order:
2019 Bedrock Old Hill Ranch Heritage, $54.99
The 2018 Old Hill Ranch Heritage comes from a vineyard planted to a field blend of over 30 varieties, with a good amount of Grenache, that has been farmed organically since the 1960s. Medium ruby-purple, it has a bright, open nose of stone fruit salad, blueberries, black cherries, Earl Grey tea leaves, dried citrus peel, and tree bark with oodles of exotic spices and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it’s tightly coiled but intense in the mouth with a chewy frame and wicked juicy acidity, finishing very long and technicolor.

2018 Bedrock Winery Bedrock Vineyard Heritage, $44.99
Medium ruby-purple, the 2018 Bedrock Vineyard Heritage opens with fantastic perfume: ripe peach, sliced blueberries, warm red cherries, underbrush, violet, and dried tangerine peel with nuances of crushed stone, dried hollyhock, and exotic spices. Medium-bodied, it floods the mouth with a singularly perfumed fruit layer with a chewy frame and wicked freshness, finishing long and evolving. Wow! Just a pup, give this another year or two in bottle and drink it over the next 10-15 years. 94 points from The Wine Advocate!
