There is no question that Bordeaux is the mecca for lovers of dry white, dry red, and sweet white wines. First growth Bordeaux - along with some Super-Seconds - are the equal of any red wines in the world. The finest Sauternes are easily among the world's most extraordinary sweet white wines.
But one Bordeaux category that goes underappreciated is the dry white wines. Blends of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and, in some cases, Muscadelle, the finest dry white wines of Bordeaux can be truly profound. Unfortunately, many of them are prohibitively expensive.
However, the 2017 R de Rieussec Bordeaux Blanc Sec (I have been fortunate to taste about a dozen vintages, and the 2017 is amazing) is a fabulous wine and very affordable at only $35.99. It is very aromatic with baked pears, lemon rind, peaches, and stone. Very powerful and rich with depth and intensity that shows superb power. Dense and solid with wild fruit. It’s aromatically complex and exciting. A beautiful wine now and for the next ten years plus in a cool cellar. James Suckling agrees with me, rating it 95 points!
