This cooler, more classic vintage is a bit of an anomaly, with hotter growing seasons recorded in 19, 20, 21 and 22. These hotter conditions can cause the Sangiovese Grape to lose some of its unique tangy elegance in favor of sheer power. The 2018 effort from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona showcases this finesse, with blue and red berries, cherries lifted by citrus and herbal notes like thyme, sage and lavender, mingling with violets, orange peel, licorice cola, mocha, coffee, vanilla and tobacco. Framing all of this complexity with needed structure is a harmonious balance between elevated acidity from the cooler growing season and a present but seamless tannic backbone.
